Iakovos Tsounis was born on June 20, 1925 in Patras. He was the last of 13 children in his family, his father was a forester. At the age of 15, Tsounis fought in the Greek-Italian war of 1940. He worked as a custom officer in Piraeus. In 1966 he joined the shipping industry as a shipowner and acquired 13 commercial ships. He donated almost all of his property to the Hellenic Armed Forces, two months before his death. He passed away on April 10, 2021 after being hospitalized at the 401 General Military Hospital of Athens.
